Study and work, work and study. But there is one day of the year when translators simply have to forget about study and work and indulge in fun. How did the International Translator's Day holiday come about?

Holiday " International Translation Day ” was established relatively recently - in 1991. The appearance of this professional holiday is the merit of the International Federation of Translators. It was this federation that established the holiday, choosing a symbolic date for translation activities - September 30.

The fact is that on September 30, 420, the legendary writer, historian, translator Hieronymus of Stridon, who is considered the patron saint of translators, died. On this day, congresses and conferences of translators, as well as entertainment events, are traditionally held. In some cities, festive processions of translators are organized with flags of those countries whose languages ​​are most widely spoken in the world. If you need to hold an event in honor of International Translator Day, you can borrow an interesting idea from St. Petersburg translators, who, after the procession, launched several dozen paper boats decorated with flags of different countries. Instead of boats, you can launch paper airplanes with the symbols of countries or send into the sky bundles of balloons on which the word “Peace” is written in many languages. 1. Goblin translation. Simultaneous interpreters can demonstrate not only their professionalism, but also their sense of humor. You will need episodes from various foreign films. Participants need to do simultaneous translation into Russian, but this translation should at least be funny. You can change the names of the characters and translate, as they say, “from the lantern.” Will the translator be able to get his bearings and make a joke about the topic? Anyone who copes with the task perfectly can be given a comic diploma in the specialty “Specialist in Goblin Film Translations.”

2. Sign language translation. Translators know how to translate thought into thought through words. Will they cope with the task if they have to translate non-verbally? Several couples are selected to participate. The pairs are transferred one by one. One is put on headphones with music so that he doesn’t hear anything. Another is given a list of ten words. The task is to show the word using only hand language, that is, various gestures and combinations of fingers. The time is counting down. The winner will be the pair that will take the least time to translate and understand 10 words (each pair is given a different list of words, but it is advisable that they match the topic).

3. Electronic translator. You will need well-known fairy tales in different foreign languages ​​(in those languages ​​that the participants speak). The fairy tale is “driven” into an electronic translator, translated into Russian, and the result is again translated into a foreign language. The result will be complete rubbish (use the worst electronic translator). Hand out sheets of paper with these texts to the participants and have them try to quickly figure out what kind of fairy tale it is. It is advisable to use different fairy tales so that everyone has to guess their own text. There will be a prize for everyone who guesses correctly.

You can perform some well-known Russian song (for example, “Katyusha”) at karaoke - everyone sings a line, but in the language in which they specialize. Well, then you can remember interesting translation mistakes, anecdotes and stories on this topic. Here, for example, is one of them:

Americans do not always express obscenities literally, but try to use euphemisms: for example, instead of the too rude “Suck my dick” (which means a rude call for oral sex), they can say “Sick my duck”, simply rearranging the letters, playing with words. A writer from Chicago, Sergei Shevchenko, in the book “Your Mother, Sir,” co-written with N. Moskovtsev, says that in one Russian work of fiction about life abroad, the hero came to a respectable event wearing a T-shirt with such a slogan. (“Sick my duck”). The translator from the publishing house, apparently due to his inherent spontaneity, translated “My Sick Duck” in a footnote. “Well, well,” Shevchenko summed up.
